Welcome to the Montana Department of Corrections website.
Our goal is to help citizens understand the functions of the corrections system in Montana by providing an extensive level of information about our facilities, programs and services.
We have jurisdiction over an offender population of almost 13,000. We place an emphasis on managing most of those offenders outside of prison and currently supervise about 80 percent of all offenders in community corrections programs.
We believe the most effective corrections system is one that addresses the underlying individualized needs of offenders. We provide a variety of programs to deal with alcohol and drug addictions, mental health issues and behavioral problems. These programs are designed to reduce recidivism and divert offenders from prison, reserving secure facilities for those offenders who truly need incarceration. We work with offenders to give them the means of successfully returning to their communities and becoming law-abiding, productive citizens.
Public safety remains our top priority, but we also support victims of crime with programs that keep them informed of where offenders are in the system and offer them healing opportunities.
I hope you find the information provided through this website informative and an aid in understanding that a successful corrections system is one that prepares offenders to contribute to a safer Montana for us all.
