Restitution Collected

DOC's Collections Unit has collected court-ordered crime victim restitution from adult felony offenders since the program began on October 1, 2003.

Since Fiscal Year 2004, the unit has collected more than $25 million in restitution from offenders and returned it to innocent victims. It has also collected $2.8 million in court-ordered fees.

Under Montana Code Annotated 46-18-241, the Department of Corrections can collect restitution from offenders' prison accounts, earnings after their release, and property. The restitution obligation remains with offenders until it is fully paid or, upon their death, the balance attaches to their estate.
